The President of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering told EHU students and faculty that education has the power to drive changes in their country, Belarus. The MEP and former president of the European Parliament encouraged students to take what they have learned and experienced back with them to Belarus and to spread the word among friends and relatives about the benefits of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law that they have seen in action at EHU.
In a discussion with Pöttering, students emphasized that they choose EHU because “there is nothing like this university in Belarus” and it “offers disciplines that are not available in Belarus.” Students said they feel the “level of education is higher” at EHU and there are more “possibilities to obtain new knowledge and competencies.”
This was Pöttering’s second visit to EHU. He met with students in 2008 while serving as president of the European Parliament, and organized a trip for them to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung has supported initiatives that benefit EHU students for many years. Both the foundation and Pöttering have been stalwart in their support of EHU, for which the entire EHU community is most grateful.
