EHU fourth-year student and vice president of the Lithuanian National Union of Students, Maksim Milto, participated in a constituent assembly of the Belarusian Students’ Association (BSA) in Minsk on October 5, 2012. Milto represented the European Students’ Union, which initiated the establishment of the BSA. This association unites the self-governing bodies of Belarus’ higher education institutions, and is dedicated to encouraging student participation in the governance of higher education.
Milto, who studies cultural heritage and tourism at EHU, reported that representatives of nearly fifty higher education institutions from various regions took part in the event.
In his presentation, Milto emphasized that neighboring student movements, such as those in Lithuania, should serve as examples for the national student organization in Belarus. He also assured the support of the European Students’ Union for the organization: "The Lithuanian National Union of Students is interested in having reliable partners in neighboring countries, especially now, as we see that the independent student movement has taken a big step forward. We hope to soon begin implementing joint projects with Belarusian students."
Representatives of foreign student organizations, such as the Student Parliament of Tromso University (Norway), the Russian Students’ Union, and the Ukrainian Association of Students’ Self-Government, also participated in the conference.
