EHU graduate Daria Zaichenko (BA, Media and Visual Design, 2010), along with illustrator Lukas Novak, have been recognized for their design work on the book Zoo der imaginären Tiere (The Zoo of Imaginary Animals). The book was named one of the top 15 most beautiful books published in Austria in the Illustrated and Photo Books category by the Association of Austrian Booksellers. The competition was organized in cooperation with Austria's Federal Ministry for Education, Arts, and Culture.
The book, which encourages young readers to look for hidden fantastic animals in the illustrations, is produced in the Leporello style—a special style of binding in which images are attached to each other and can be folded in different ways. The jury noted that every page of the book draws the reader into the game, creating both literary and aesthetic value.
After graduating from EHU's Media and Visual Design undergraduate program, Zaichenko enrolled in a graduate graphic design program at the Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien (University of Applied Arts Vienna), where she is currently a student.
In total 224 books competed in six categories–General Literature, Illustrated and Photo Books, Children's and Youth Books, Non-Fiction and Academic Books, Teaching and Textbooks, Special Productions and/or Books Not-For-Sale. The award-winning books will be promoted at the Leipzig Book Fair, Frankfurt Book Fair, London Book Fair, and Vienna Book this year and will be featured this coming December in the exhibition The Most Beautiful Books of Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands of 2012, which will take place in Vienna.
