EHU alum mulls bid for Belarusian presidency

EHU alumna Olga Karatch (MA Public Policy, 2012) has confirmed that she is considering a run for the Belarusian presidency in 2015.

“We want to raise the quality of life in Belarus to European levels,” says Karatch, who heads the civic organization “Our House” and was the only opposition member elected to Vitebsk City Council (2003-2007).

“Our House” recently launched a campaign called “Eurorepair Belarus”. It calls for measures to increase the quality of life, including in education, medicine, and public spaces.

Karatch believes in the power of citizens to create the kind of society they would like to live in, and has said that her experiences as a student at EHU helped shape her civic activism: “At EHU, I realized that democracy-building begins with you.”

Karatch is the founder of the independent newspaper Vitebskiy Kurier, a recipient of Germany's International Award for Civic Courage (2010), and was named Human Rights Activist of the Year (2007) by Amnesty International.
